Are you intersted in Nigiri sushi? Sushi is a Japanese favorite dish made with rice and some ingredients. It has been in the Japanese culture for some time. It began in Southeast Asia and spread to South China before it made its way to Japan.
It was originally made with vinegar to produce a sour taste and help preserve the dish. The rich was discarded and the fish was eaten. That is no longer the practice. Alone with sushi are the many stories connected to it.
On such story involves a couple who moved to Tokyo in the 80s. They went to a mixed Italian/Japanese restaurant with some friends for a night out. It was the first time they tried sushi and they liked it. After that, they enjoyed it several more time at various restaurants.
After some time, their friends took them to a famous restaurant for some sushi. The woman ordered sushi but didn’t remember the kind of fish she wanted with it. When the dish came, it had a whole fish with slices cut into it. As she looked more closely, the fish was still moving. She managed to actually eat a slice of it.
Along with the many stories of sushi are the various kinds of sushi.
One particular kind is Nigiri sushi (Nigirizushi). The word means hand-formed and that is exactly what it is. Each serving is a mound of rich the chef presses into a rectangular box. It is draped with some neta (fish). In aditioin, it has topping made with strips of nori (seaweed) made of octopus, eel, or squid. This dish is usually served in pairs.
One particular type of nigirzushi is a hand-formed clump of sushi rice that has a strip of seaweed wrapped around it. This forms a vessel that contains some finely chopped ingredients. That might include oysters, sea urchin, qual eggs, etc.
Another type is the temarizushi. It is a ball-shaped sushi made by forming the rice into a ball with plastic wrap.
Sushi is an acquired taste due to the practices of using raw fish ingredients and other ingredients such as seaweed and other creatures of the sea. Chefs make sushi in many different ways to include hand forming or nigirzushi. This particular form of sushi is popular because it is easy to make and the ingredients are flexable. The sushi is formed with the hands and other molds to include wooden rectangular boxes. It is easy to work with and it can contain your favorite ingredients depending on your taste.
